Aerobic Culture & Sensitivity For Birds

ANIMAL GENETICS UK OFFERS AROBIC CULTURE AND SENSITIVITY TESTING FOR BIRDS. TESTING CAN HELP IDENTIFY A NUMBER OF COMMON BACTERIAL AND FUNGAL ORGANISMS FOUND IN BIRDS.

Description:
Infectious diseases are the most common causes of illness in caged and aviary birds. Many of these illnesses are a direct result of, or further complicated by, a secondary infection of an opportunistic bacterial and fungal organism. Samples collected from the cloaca or cloanal of the bird may yield certain pathogenic (disease-causing) bacteria or fungi. The laboratory can identify many of these aerobic microorganisms so that the appropriate treatment can be initiated.

Animal Genetics standard aerobic culture assay incorporates four different agar-based growth medias in one quad plate. Three of these are specific for bacteria and one for yeast. These growth medias help to differentiate common (mostly gram negative) bacteria. These bacteria include, but are not limited to, Ecoli, Pseudomonas, Salmonella, Pasteurella, Streptococcic, Staphylococcic.

Culture Sensitivity:
If one or more bacterial isolates from a bird have been identified, the next step is to conduct anti-microbial sensitivity testing. Drug-impregnated discs are placed in contact with colonies of each previously identified microbial isolate. The effectiveness of each anti-microbial is determined by measuring the zone around each disc in which the growth of the organisms have been completely inhibited. Generally speaking, the larger the zone, the more effective the anti-microbial. Those anti-microbials that are "effective" can be selected by the veterinarian and a drug therapy with which to treat the patient. This type of anti-microbial testing is only done for bacterial isolates and is generally not done with fungal isolates.

Limitations:

Aerobic cultures are designed to detect a number of common bacteria and fungal organisms found in birds. However, additional testing may be required for those bacteria and fungi that will not grow on select media. Sample collection plays a pivotal part in the overall accuracy of the test so please use caution and follow the instructions carefully.
